In perhaps Britain’s greatest hour of need, the eleventh Doctor, as played by Matt Smith, answers the call of Winston Churchill (guest star Ian McNeice) and arrives in London during World War II. With Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) at his side, the Doctor wants to learn more about Britain’s latest weapon that has started to turn the tide in the war. However, he is horrified to learn that the source of the country’s good fortune is non-other than a Dalek! Is this another ploy for global extermination or has the Doctor’s greatest enemy truly had a change of heart?

In Matt Smith and Karen Gillan’s second episode as the Doctor and Amy Pond, the duo travel to the 33^rd century, where the entirety of the United Kingdom has left the Earth aboard the Starship UK. While all seems pleasant at first, they soon discover the dark underbelly of the cosmic nation – literally. Rather than being powered by an engine, the star-ship is actually built atop the back of an imprisoned Star Whale, leaving the Doctor with a terrible choice: save the whale or the people living on it.
