Doctor Who – Gridlock – Series 3 Episode 3

gridlockWritten by Russell T Davies, Directed by Richard Clark, Edited by John Richards.  The Doctor played by David Tennant and Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman) find themselves in the distant future.  The majority of the Earth’s population seem to be travelling on a permanently gridlocked highway.  They start the episode in an alleyway where market traders are selling drugs applied in patches which change people’s moods.  Martha is kidnapped and finds herself the needed extra passenger of a couple called Milo and Cheen.  Cheen is pregnant and they need to have 3 passengers in order to join the fast lane.  Now they are on the fast lane they explain that it will take them 10 years to travel 6 miles to their destination, after which they will drop Martha off.

The Doctor in slow pursuit has to board another van with Thomas Kincade Brannigan and his wife Valerie.  The Doctor is unable to catch up with Martha due to the countless vehicles as far as the eye can see.  He is advised to call the Police who are on ansaphone …

Meanwhile Martha’s car, now it has joined the fast lane, is surrounded by strange noises.  These turn out to be from the Macra, monsterous crab like beings who feed off the humans who travel toward them on the highway.  Milo cuts the power in Martha’s car to save them from the beasts but this causes the air to stop flowing …

The Doctor’s pursuit is halted by Novice Hame, who teleports the Doctor to the Senate building where he meets the Face of Boe.  A drug called Bliss has mutated into a virus and teh Face of Boe is now wired into the grid in an attempt to save humanity…
